On Campaign:
In the Age of the Flintlock Musket and On Campaign, 1740-1815
In the Age of Percussion Caps, Breechload and Needle-Guns - 1861-1871
These
systems are designed to work seamlessly with the Tactical systems (Wars of
Napoleon, Age of Frederick the Great, American Civil War and Wars of von
Moltke modules) creating a strategic and logistical background for your
tabletop battles. Alternatively, minor and general engagements can be fought
within the On Campaign system without the need to resort to the tabletop.
Subsequently, these engagements can be fought out on the tabletop as stand
alone campaign generated games.
On Campaign is
intended to be used primarily by three principal wargamers. Two will act as
the commander-in-chief of two opposing armies, whilst the third assumes the
role of the gamemaster (GM). The GM will be exclusively responsible for all
computer interaction and input, relaying information generated by the system
software to and from the players. Additional wargamers can be assigned to
tabletop roles as general engagements are generated during the campaign.
The system can accommodate large forces;
however, the system is at its best when coordinating the movements of
multiple corps, representing perhaps fifty or sixty thousand combatants, at
an operational level of engagement. The intent is to place our tabletop
games within the context of an operational campaign, subject to the vagaries
of the season, weather, attrition and logistics.
Below are a few of the more than forty screens and forms seen in the Age
of the Flintlock Musket On Campaign system.

A recent On Campaign play test scenario, that I recently completed, featured
the first drive towards Berlin during the month of August 1813.
I thought I'd share some of the narrative of this scenario.
The French goal is to defeat the Coalition forces defending Berlin and
occupy the city itself within six-days of the opening of the campaign.
French forces begin concentrated and will need to act quickly to maintain an
advantage before the Coalition are able to concentrate.
The Coalition goal is to defend the approaches to Berlin and defeat the
French forces. Coalition forces will need to identify the main thrust of the
French advance and concentrate to engage them at an advantage.
The army strengths are represented at 1/3 their original, so the French
field about 25,000 men, and the Coalition about 40,000 men.
The French, commanded by Oudinot, commands his own headquarters, three
independent infantry divisions, and independent cavalry reserve and three
independent light cavalry brigades. The base of operations was located at
Luckau.
The Coalition, commanded by Bernadotte, commands his own headquarters, five
independent infantry divisions, an independent cavalry reserve and five
independent light cavalry brigades (three of which are Cossacks). The base
of operations was Berlin, and outposts extended between Beelitz in the west
and Beeskow in the east.
The opposing commanders have intelligence on the composition of the both
armies, however, they are unaware of the individual unit strengths of the
enemy units. They are unaware of the location of the various independent
commands except for their depot, army headquarters and any espionage
intelligence reports that might be available before the campaign opens.
The French player is also unaware of the political requirement that two of
the enemy infantry divisions (the Swedes and Prussian Landwehr) were
incapable of offensive operations, and that the Swedes would be required to
withdraw from any potential engagement if circumstances allowed. The
Coalition player was very aware of this situation and would be forced to
deploy his forces accordingly.
Defeat for the French would result in the personal dishonor of Oudinot and
his loss of command of the Army of Berlin.
Defeat for the Coalition would result in the parole of the remaining forces
of the Army of the North and the resignation of the Swedish Crown Prince,
Bernadotte, from allied headquarters, and the loss of the Swedish forces
from the Coalition.
Both armies begin the campaign with seven days rations with the divisions
and a train, attached to each, hauling a further six day supply.
Consequently, food should not be an issue, given the six-day timeline.
Day 01
At midnight on Day 0 the two armies were arrayed as shown below (see
photo gallery above).

Espionage and Intelligence:
No espionage reports were received at HQ 101. Prior intelligence located
Bernadotte (501) and Army of the North Base (530).
Espionage reports were received at HQ 501 locating Wolff (116). Prior
intelligence located Oudinot (101) and Army of Berlin Base (118).
Beyond that the respective players had no knowledge of their opponent
commands or independent command strengths.
French March Orders and reassignments:
The French made one organizational change at midnight by assigning von Lecoq
(109) to Oudinot (101), and reassigned a horse battery to Jacquinot (114).
The French orders created three offensive groups.
The center commanded by Oudinot would march north directly toward Berlin,
and included Wolff (106) and DeFrance (113).
The left-wing, would march west and then north toward Berlin, and included
Morand (102) and Jacquinot (114).
The right-wing would march east, then north, before swinging west toward
Berlin and included Pacthod (105) and von Gablenz (117).
Cavalry commands were issued maintain contact orders (passive).
Infantry commands were issued Press orders (offensive).
All orders would be issued from Oudinot's HQ. All reports would be directed
to Oudinot's HQ.
Coalition March Orders:
The Coalition made no organizational or assignment changes.
The Coalition determined to aggressively probe southward, with Hobe (524)
and Illowaisky (528) toward the known French concentration around Luckau,
with orders to engage enemy cavalry contacts but observe infantry.
Other forward cavalry commands were issued maintain contact orders.
Borstell (506) was instructed to build fortifications in his current
location.
Other infantry commands were ordered to move generally in a southerly
direction, with hold orders upon contact.
With these orders, I ran the Day 01 0400, 0800 and 1200 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases.
Initial contact was made between Wolff (116) and Hobe (524) and Illowaisky
(528) and reported to Oudinot and Bernadotte at noon.
The French issued some minor adjustments to the left-wing order of march.
With these orders, I ran the Day 01 1600, 2000 and 2400 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases.
At 2200 hours, Oudinot (101) had skirmished with Illowaisky (528) defeating
that command and inflicting less than 200 casualties whilst losing less than
75.
The Cossacks were heavily outnumbered and handled very roughly by the Saxon
infantry and French artillery.
Espionage reports were received at both HQ's, providing locations for
Bekendorf (524) and Bihalov (529) and Morand (102) and Pacthod (105).
Reconnaissance reports were received at both HQ's. The French reconnaissance
was generally poor, identifying the name of the contact only, whilst the
Coalition reconnaissance was effective, providing approximate strengths and
march order destinations in some instances.
Attrition:
The numbers of men straggling and hospitalized represent the final daily
totals after losses and returns are considered. For example, the Coalition
indicate 1 returning from hospital. This is probably a wounded Cossack from
the earlier skirmish.
Clear conditions anticipated from midnight until 0400 hours
Ground conditions currently Firm [0]
Army of Berlin (Oudinot):
755 stragglers leave ranks
990 hospitalized
Army of the North (Bernadotte):
1229 stragglers leave ranks
1 hospitalized
return

French March Orders and reassignments:
The French made two organizational changes at midnight by
assigning Wolff (116) and DeFrance to Oudinot (101), reinforcing Oudinot
with cavalry.
The center commanded by Oudinot would continue to march north
directly toward Berlin.
The left-wing, would continue to march west and then north
toward Berlin.
The right-wing would continue to march east, then north,
before swinging west toward Berlin.
Cavalry commands were issued maintain contact orders
(passive).
Infantry commands were issued Press orders (offensive).
All orders would be issued from Oudinot's HQ. All reports
would be directed to Oudinot's HQ.
Coalition March Orders:
The Coalition made no organizational or assignment changes.
The Prussian infantry divisions Homburg (502), Borstell (506)
and Putlitz (510) were ordered to take up defensive positions and entrench.
All the Cossack commands Illowaisky (528), Bihalov (529) and Lowenstern
(527) were ordered to advance on Luckau, the French base, with maintain
contact orders, but instructed to retreat if they encountered infantry.
Hobe (524) would maintain contact with the enemy delaying and retreating
before them.
Skjoldebrand (519) was ordered to build fortifications using
local civilian labor.
With these orders, I ran the Day 02 0400, 0800 and 1200 turn
phases, and upon completion provided the players with the reports etc.,
received throughout those phases.
Oudinot received three new combat reports.
At 2200 hours (the previous day) at 243218, Pacthod (105) had skirmished
with Bihalov (529) and been victorious, inflicting less than 200 casualties
and losing less than 75.
At 1000 hours at 237218, Defrance (113) had skirmished with Hobe (524) and
been victorious, inflicting less than 100 casualties and losing less than
125 men.
At 1000 hours at 237218, Oudinot (101) had skirmished with
Illowaisky (528) and been victorious, inflicting less than 100 casualties
and losing less than 50 men.
Clearly the initial clashes were all going favorably for the
French. However, these were clashes with Cossacks and light cavalry against
infantry and heavy cavalry.
The Coalition was unaware of these skirmishes at this time as
couriers had not yet arrived.
However, they did issue orders for Illowaisky (528) to
combine with Hobe (524).
With these orders, I ran the Day 02 1600, 2000 and 2400 turn
phases, and upon completion provided the players with the reports etc.,
received throughout those phases.
At 1400 hours at 233217, Jacquinot (114) had skirmished with
Bekendorf (525) and been defeated inflicting less than 50 casualties whilst
losing less than 100 men. This was the first negative clash for the French.
At 1800 hours at 237219, DeFrance (113) had skirmished with Illowaisky (528)
and been victorious inflicting less than 75 casualties whilst losing less
than 25 men.
The Coalition were unaware of these latest skirmishes but had
received reports of the earlier skirmishes.
Espionage reports were received at the French HQ, providing
locations for Borstell (506), Bekendorf (525) and Bihalov (529).
Reconnaissance reports were received at both HQ's. The French
reconnaissance was generally poor, identifying the name of the contact only,
whilst the Coalition reconnaissance was effective, providing approximate
strengths and march order destinations in some instances. The Coalition had
a clear view of the general composition and locations of all three French
thrusts.
Oudinot had now located three of the five infantry divisions including
Homburg, Borstell and Putlitz, directly to his north, screened by Hobe.
However, Oudinot had with him only one small infantry division, the
artillery reserve and the heavy cavalry.
Attrition:
Light Rain had been a major factor throughout much of the
second day, and it would continue into the next day.
Light Rain anticipated from midnight until 0400 hours
Ground conditions currently Firm [2]
Army of Berlin (Oudinot):
741 stragglers leave ranks
410 hospitalized
Army of the North (Bernadotte):
1321 stragglers leave ranks
No new hospitalized

French March Orders and reassignments:
The center commanded by Oudinot take up a defensive posture,
awaiting the reaction of the enemy. This was meant as a pinning action as
the double envelopment on both the left and right continued.
The left-wing, would continue to march west and then north
toward Berlin.
The right-wing would continue to march east, then north,
before swinging west toward Berlin.
All orders would be issued from Oudinot's HQ. All reports
would be directed to Oudinot's HQ.
Coalition March Orders:
The Coalition made no organizational or assignment changes.
The opportunity for the Coalition forces to strike Oudinot
was obvious. Orders were given to strike camp at 0400 hours and move to
engage the French with Bernadotte (501), Homburg (502) and Borstell (506).
Putlitz (510) would halt, and clear the way and Skjoldebrand (519) was
continue to build fortifications using local civilian labor.
With these orders, I ran the Day 02 0400, 0800 and 1200 turn
phases, and upon completion provided the players with the reports etc.,
received throughout those phases.
At 1000 hours the first general engagement occurred. The battle was named
Baruth, but was fought at 237220. The French were deemed the initiating side
but they had been outscouted and in a tabletop encounter would be required
to deploy of portion of their forces to the table in advance of the
Coalition. The French fielded 5,849 men including 45 cannon. The Coalition
fielded 17,602 men including 30 cannon. Thus far, the French force at Baruth
had lost 490 men including 74 dead to attrition and skirmishes. The
Coalition force at Baruth had lost 1,293 men including 165 dead to attrition
and skirmishes. The engagement was saved as a tactical OB for later
potential use on the tabletop, but the engagement was fought using the
system.
At Midday, Oudinot received two new combat reports.
At 1800 hours (the previous day) at 233217, Morand (102) had skirmished with
Bekendorf (525) and been victorious, inflicting less than 300 casualties and
losing less than 200.
At 1000 hours at 237220, Oudinot (101) had fought a general engagement with
Homburg (502) and suffered a major defeat losing 2,688 men and 3 cannon
(45%).
The Coalition also received two new combat reports.
One from Bekendorf announcing his earlier defeat from the previous day.
The other reported a major victory with loses of 804 men (4%).
However, they did issue orders for Illowaisky (528) to
combine with Hobe (524).
The battle of Baruth had been a very serious reverse for the French.
Oudinot ordered a continuation
of his withdrawal towards Baruth, leaving DeFrance (113) as a rearguard to
delay the anticipated Coalition pursuit.
Berndotte ordered Hobe (524) forward as an advance guard,
supported by HQ (501), Homburg (502), Borstell (506) and Oppen (523).
With these orders, I ran the Day 03 1600, 2000 and 2400 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases.
The rain had continued throughout the morning
and in the early afternoon conditions continually worsened
Oudinot received four combat reports.
At 1400 hours at 237219, DeFrance (113) had skirmished with
Hobe (524) and been defeated inflicting less than 50 casualties whilst
losing less than 125 men.
At 1400 hours at 234218, Morand (102) had fought a general engagement with
Laptiev (514) and been victorious losing 799 men (10%).
At 1800 hours at 237220,
DeFrance (113) had skirmished with Hobe (524) and been victorious inflicting
less than 75 casualties whilst losing less than 125 men. DeFrance was
fighting a series of tough rearguard actions.
At 2200 hours at 237220, DeFrance (113) had skirmished with Oppen (523) and
been defeated inflicting less than 50 casualties whilst losing less than 200
men. DeFrance was running out of steam....
The Coalition also received four
combat reports, those from Hobe and Oppen.
The other reported a major defeat for Laptiev (514) with losses of 1,667 men
(34%)
The morning had seen a major defeat for Oudinot's outnumbered
forces, the afternoon had seen the ebb and flow of the rearguard action as
Hobe and Oppen engaged DeFrance. The only bright spot was the report of the
major victory by Morand against the Russians under Laptiev and Bekendorf.
An Espionage report was received at the Coalition HQ,
providing a location for Gablenz (117).
Reconnaissance reports were received at both HQ's. The French
received nine reconnaissance reports of varying accuracy. The Coalition
received four reports providing better intelligence. It was clear that the
Coalition cavalry were in the ascendancy in the reconnaissance fight.
The French had a choice. Recall Morand to reinforce Oudinot,
or have Oudinot march to Morand to reinforce his success.
The Coalition had a choice. Recall Laptiev and consolidate,
or continue to press Oudinot.
Attrition:
Rain had been a major factor throughout much of the third day, but had
broken with a heavy rain storm late in the day, the weather appeared to be
improving.
Clear conditions anticipated from midnight until 0400 hours

French March Orders and reassignments:
The center commanded by Oudinot would retire towards Baruth, awaiting the
reaction of the enemy.
The left-wing, would force march to concentrate with the center at Baruth.
The right-wing would double force march toward Berlin.
All orders would be issued from Oudinot's HQ. All reports would be directed
to Oudinot's HQ.
A full muster returned the following strength and losses:
16,170 Effectives 6,961 Losses including 997 dead
Coalition March Orders and reassignments:
The army was ordered to break contact and take up their earlier positions
but to march to the sound of the guns where threatened and engaged.
Skjoldebrand (519) was to continue to build fortifications using local
civilian labor. The cavalry was ordered to withdraw if pressed. The Cossacks
were ordered to disrupt enemy lines of communication and supply.
All orders would be issued from Bernadotte's HQ. All reports would be
directed to Bernadotte's HQ.
A full muster returned the following strength and losses:
33,987 Effectives 6,278 Losses including 840 dead
With these orders, I ran the Day 04 0400, 0800 and 1200 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases. Weather conditions again began to deteriorate as
the rain returned during the late morning.
Oudinot’s HQ received six reconnaissance reports. It was clear to the French
advance guard that the main Coalition forces were retiring.
Bernadotte’s HQ received seven reconnaissance reports.
French March Orders and reassignments:
The center commanded by Oudinot would now concentrate with the left-wing at
Baruth, then march north at force march pace in an attempt to reacquire
contact with the enemy. DeFrance (113) would act as an advance guard.
All orders would be issued from Oudinot's HQ. All reports would be directed
to Oudinot's HQ.
Coalition March Orders and reassignments:
No new orders were issued.
With these orders, I ran the Day 04 1600, 2000 and 2400 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases. Weather conditions continued to deteriorate
culminating in a heavy rainstorm in the late evening.
Oudinot’s HQ received six reconnaissance reports. Contact had been
reestablished with the Coalition forces.
Bernadotte’s HQ received ten reconnaissance reports. Including a report that
contact had been made with the French base of operations. However,
Lowenstern, who provided this report, was acting under passive orders and
could not engage with the undefended depot.
The French had been concerned initially that Oudinot would be crushed and
had ordered Morand and Jacquinot to force march to concentrate for a
defensive battle at Baruth, whilst pinning all their hopes on the successful
advance of Pacthod (105) against Berlin from the east. The Coalition, aware
of Pacthod’s location, but concerned about the defeat of Laptiev (514),
decided to regroup further north. The French losing contact with the
Coalition forces were concerned that they were marching to engage Pacthod in
strength. This had resulted in their change in orders at noon and their
march north in force. The stage was set for a third general engagement.
Attrition:
Clear conditions anticipated from midnight until 0400 hours
Ground conditions currently Good [4]
Army of Berlin (Oudinot):

French March Orders and reassignments:
Existing orders remained in effect.
All orders would be issued from Oudinot's HQ. All reports would be directed
to Oudinot's HQ.
Coalition March Orders and reassignments:
Sensing an opportunity to crush Oudinot’s combined center and left-wing,
Bernadotte ordered an immediate attack with all forces available. Lowenstern
(527) was also given orders to engage the French base. Bihalov (529) was
ordered to maintain contact with Pacthod (105).
All orders would be issued from Bernadotte's HQ. All reports would be
directed to Bernadotte's HQ.
With these orders, I ran the Day 05 0400, 0800 and 1200 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases.
The Battle of Rangsdorf (236220):
At 0600 hours the third general engagement occurred. The battle was named
Rangsdorf but was fought at 236220. The French were deemed the
non-initiating side. The French had been outscouted and in a tabletop
encounter would be required to deploy of portion of their forces to the
table in advance of the French. The French fielded 8,965 men including 52
cannons. The Coalition fielded 15,656 men including 38 cannons. Thus far,
the French force at Rangsdorf had lost 5,609 men including 1,161 dead to
attrition and previous engagements. The Coalition force at Rangsdorf had
lost 2,294 men including 379 dead to attrition and previous engagements. The
engagement was saved as a tactical OB for later potential use on the
tabletop, but the engagement was fought using the system.
At Midday, Oudinot received four new combat reports.
At 1400 hours (the previous day) at 243222, Pacthod (105) had skirmished
with Bihalov (529) and been victorious, inflicting less than 300 casualties
and losing less than 25 men.
At 0600 hours at 236220, Oudinot (101) had fought a general engagement with
Bernadotte (501) and suffered a major defeat losing 2,831 men (31%).
At 1000 hours at 236220, DeFrance (113) had skirmished with Hobe (524) in a
rearguard action and been defeated, inflicting less than 50 casualties and
losing less than 75 men.
At 1000 hours at 237220, Oudinot (101) had skirmished with Oppen (523) in a
rearguard action and been victorious, inflicting less than 400 casualties
and losing less than 75 men.
The Coalition also received four new combat reports.
Three of which confirmed the outcomes of the various skirmishes.
The other reported a major victory with loses of 1,059 men (6%).
The battle of Rangsdorf had been a very serious reverse for the French.
Oudinot ordered a renewed withdrawal towards Baruth, leaving DeFrance (113)
as a rearguard to delay the anticipated Coalition pursuit.
Berndotte ordered an immediate pursuit, ordering the light cavalry to form
the advance guard (there was much gnashing of teeth over the defeat of
Oppen’s heavy cavalry earlier in the day). Illowaisky (528) was reassigned
to an independent command and order to march north. Skjoldebrand (519) and
Putlitz (510) were also ordered north and northeast in an attempt to
interdict Pacthod (105) in his advance upon Berlin. Bihalov (529) was given
discretionary orders to avoid further contact with Pacthod (105) given
losses from earlier skirmishes.
With these orders, I ran the Day 05 1600, 2000 and 2400 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases.
At midnight Oudinot received a dispatch from Gablenz (117). It appeared that
they had been without orders (an earlier courier had been lost) and had
decided to requisition supplies from the local township, 244220. The mayor
had resisted this requisition and was executed on the orders of Gablenz as a
warning to the population.
Oudinot also received the news that his depot had been captured in an
encounter with Lowenstern (527). Bernadotte would remain unaware of this
development as the courier had been intercepted.
At 2200 hours at 237219, Defrance (113) had skirmished with Hobe (524) and
been defeated, inflicting less than 75 casualties and losing less than 100
men.
Contrary to the mood at Bernadotte’s HQ, the mood at Oudinot’s HQ was
obviously bleak. The French central forces were in full retreat, DeFrance
was clearly a spent force and they had lost their depot. Pacthod was too far
away to provide accurate and timely intelligence. But, they must be nearing
Berlin!

French March Orders:
Orders were issued to Pacthod (105) and Gablenz (117) to cease hostilities
and retire upon Luckau. However, the Oudinot knew these orders would take
time to be received and Pacthod might reach Berlin before receipt!
A full muster returned the following strength and losses:
12,626 Effectives 10,505 Losses including 2,261 dead
Coalition March Orders and reassignments:
Orders were issued to cease hostilities and remain in position. Those
commands enroute to defend Berlin would continue to maneuver until receipt
of these defensive orders.
There was a potential for one last engagement at the gates of Berlin!
A full muster returned the following strength and losses:
30,481 Effectives 9,784 Losses including 1,859 dead
With these orders, I ran the Day 06 0400, 0800 and 1200 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases.
Pacthod (105) would creep closer to Berlin, fifteen miles shy of his goal he
would encounter Illowaisky’s Cossacks.
With these orders, I ran the Day 06 1600, 2000 and 2400 turn phases, and
upon completion provided the players with the reports etc., received
throughout those phases.
At 1600 Pacthod (105) and Gablenz (117) received new orders instructing them
to withdraw on Luckau.
The campaign was now over. Oudinot had failed in his attempt to occupy
Berlin. Bernadotte had successfully defended the approaches to Berlin. There
had been more than a dozen skirmishes, and three general engagements. Two
major defeats for the French and one major defeat for the Coalition.
Pacthod (105) had the greatest distance to cover to reach Berlin. His
cavalry screen was ineffective due to the interception of their orders. This
meant Pacthod was forced to fight a series of skirmishes with Cossacks
blocking his way. Bihalov’s Cossacks sacrificed themselves to gain time, and
it worked.
Morand (102) had a shorter distance to cover to reach Berlin. At the battle
of Luckenwalde on the afternoon of day 3, Morand defeated the Russian’s
commanded by Laptiev. This, in the opinion of the GM, was the critical
event. Oudinot, having lost his battle at Baruth that morning, should have
advanced to concentrate with Morand and driven Laptiev back upon Berlin.
Instead the decision was taken to have Morand support Oudinot in the center.
This enabled Bernadotte to recall Laptiev and concentrate all his available
forces against Oudinot and Morand at Rangsdorf on the morning of day 5.
Bernadotte’s tactical withdrawal on day 4 had fooled Oudinot over concerns
the Coalition were hunting Pacthod following the battle of Baruth. Had
Pacthod not been delayed by Bihalov he could have reached Berlin on day 5.
At that time only the Swedes were nearby. They were not allowed to engage
and would have withdrawn in the face of the French advance. Oudinot could
have claimed victory. It was not to be
